The Shakuhachi is the traditional Bamboo Flute of Japan. Its unique sound is considered by Komuso Buddhist Monks to promote spiritual growth through meditative breathing.

The instrument has five holes and a beveled blowing edge The inside is lacquered and carefully shaped to make the instrument capable of producing subtle overtones which are an essential part of Shakuhachi music. By mastering the breath a player can produce the supple natural tones that give the sound its otherworldly qualities.

The flute is often heard out of doors, in gardens and tea houses and in traditional trio ensembles consisting of Shakuhachi, Shamisen,( a three stringed lute), Koto( a thirteen stringed harp).

Performers in concert often wear a traditional Kimono and play sitting on their knees in a seza posture.
