Hear the Shakuhachi while strolling along paths in the forest or while sitting in the traditional Japanese teahouse by the pond. This stunning garden is built into the lush woods of the Humes Estate and is well worth a visit. Concerts are held rain or shine. Learn more about the garden on the Humes Garden's web page.

The John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden is located on the North Shore of Long Island, about 26 miles from Manhattan and one mile from Planting Fields Arboretum. The nearest train station is Locust Valley, served by the Long Island Railroad. Taxis are available by calling in advance.

Directions

By Car: Take the Long Island Expressway to exit 39N, Glen Cove Road. Follow Glen Cove road North to Route 25A. Turn right and follow past C.W. Post University on the right, pass Route 107, to the next light at Wolver Hollow Road. The old Brookville police station is on your left at this intersection. Turn left and follow Wolver Hollow Road to the "T" junction with Chicken Valley Road. Turn right, pass Planting Fields Arboretum on your right; pass a blinking light and continue one-half mile to Dogwood Lane. Turn right, and enter the garden's parking area immediately on your right.

Alternate car directions

Take the Long Island Expressway or Northern State to RTE 106 North. Take 106 North to the end, in Oyster Bay. Turn left at the light on West Main Street and follow it past the railroad station and out of town. When you come to a "Y" in the road take Mill Hill Rd. up the hill and turn right on Chicken Valley Rd., just after the pond. The Humes Garden will be on your right just after a stone wall. Go right onto Dogwood Lane where you can park in the lot.

The John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden is operated by the Garden Conservatory through an agreement with the Humes Japanese Garden Foundation. The Garden Conservatory is a national nonprofit organization working to preserve exceptional American gardens.
