The Amateur Scientist
The kitchen is a laboratory thanks to the Amateur Scientist. The column, appearing in Scientific American, offers experiments readers can do using items they might have on hand. These illustrations were done to guide the reader through the experiments.

The experiments are easy and all that is needed are shopping trips to the supermarket or an electronics-parts supply store. Soon you could be creating a homemade, electronic neural network or using science to help you create the perfect soufflé!

The illustrations were done in a style consistent with previous Amateur Scientist columns. Drawn with Adobe Illustrator to produce resolution independent, high quality line work, the images use custom colors that facilitate trapping to minimize registration errors when printed.
